Anthony Fauci is an Italian-born American physician and immunologist who headed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022 and who served as chief medical adviser to the President of the United States from 2021 to 2022. He is famous for his studies of AIDS and other immune deficient diseases and his role in managing the COVID-19 pandemic under the presidencies of Donald Trump and Joe Biden. He has received numerous awards and honors for his scientific work, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and appointment as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. It is a key aspect of global health security, as it aims to prevent, detect and contain infectious disease threats that can have serious consequences for public health, the economy and society. Pandemic preparedness and response is based on generic platforms, structures, mechanisms and plans for crisis and emergency management, and requires collaboration between all sectors and levels of government, as well as between public and private actors involved in the health supply chain. Some of the international initiatives to strengthen and reform the global architecture for Pandemic Preparedness and Response are the Pandemic Treaty, the Pandemic Fund and Mechanisms for Equitable Access to Medical Countermeasures.
