ONE MILLION SPECIES RISK TO DISAPPEAR, 50% BY 2099

Nature is declining globally at rates unprecedented in history, and the speed of species extinction is accelerating: of the one million (a quarter of known) endangered species, 50% could be gone by the end of this century. This was stated by Ipbes, the Intergovernmental Scientific Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, the highest scientific authority on the subject of biodiversity, in the latest report "Assessment Report on the Different Value and Valuation of Nature" presented today in Rome at the Italian headquarters of the European Parliament. The authors of the report coined the expression "dead species walking" for the approximately 500,000 species not yet extinct, but which, due to the destruction and degradation of the habitats available to them and other factors linked to human activities (over-exploitation, pollution , climate change and the spread of invasive alien species) see their chances of survival reduce in the long run.
